This makes me so mad!! So other people's decisions to not immunize their kids in turn makes my child, who is too young to get the MMR vaccine, vulnerable to measles? Wonderful.
yaaaaaah. you and i should chat about this sometime. amanda and i talk about this subject all the time. makes us very very frustrated. she has a stronger arguement than i do since she's a public health nurse... so i just piggy back her arguement... that's why i can't say anything more intelligent in this comment but "yaaaah." hahaha. you'll have to chat with manda sometime about it!
ha, i must admit i'm slightly guilty of this fad. I was really nervous about cooper getting his mmr at 15 months....but i just switched one of his vaccines from 18 months...so he didn't get his mmr until last week when he was 18 months...can we still be friends?
Yeah, we've talked about this one before... I get so frustrated.. especially when I hear this comment: "If everyone else is immunizing their kids, why should I?"
Amen! I don't have kids but I get riled up about this subject. I work with a man and know several others that are anti-immunization. The reason their kids aren't getting sick is thanks to all the responsible parents that do immunize their children. Those who don't immunize are creating a serious health hazard for their children and anyone else who has not (or cannot yet) be immunized. Thanks for this post.
The people that don't immunize their kids are just leaching off of ours. They assume their kids will be safe because everyone else is being responsible. Um, no. It drives me nuts!!! Speaking of nuts- one of the side effects of a really bad case of the measles is sterilization in men...hmmmmm
Ahh that was a delightful reminder that I need to get Aaliyah into the doctor. Scary though, my mom got measles, mumps and rubella. Scary. To answer your question as to why some people are afraid is that some vaccinations have been known to cause Autism. (I saw it on the TODAY show). Scares me, but not enough to not get my kids immunized. I just pray really hard before I go to the doctor because I'm trying to do the right thing. This story totally freaks me out too because my sister-in-law won't immunize her kids.
As my major was Community Health Education :) I get so mad about this kind of stuff. I think I told you my sister in law is one of those who doesn't vaccinate. I can't even bring up the subject of why? with her cause I know I will end up yelling with her. She is 19 and stupid but thinks she knows all things healthy. It just really irks me because these people aren't just affecting themselevs and their families! That lady in the video is a little uneducated if she thinks the risk from the diease is better than a shot. Grrrrr.
Yeah I will speak for Chelsie in that Oprah is the reason she had the scare ;) Jenny McArthy was on her show and mentioned she believes the link of vaccines to austism. I know some people believe in the link, but there have been SO MANY studies done that say there is no link! And don't you think our government and health care system would like to NOT have to deal with treat these dieases? Why would they lie to us so they can poke our children?
Vaccinations are an abomination. There is a reason that human beings have immune systems. And the longer we pump our systems full of vaccines and antibiotics and crap like that, the weaker our collective immune systems will get.
So where so we draw the line? Do we continue doing it, because we're in too deep? Or do we stop and get the human immune system back on track?
Chelsie, Yes we can still be friends. At least you are still immunizing him!
Megan, I agree with you. I saw that Oprah too...and it just made me mad. Vaccinations have not been KNOWN to cause autism. It has never been scientifically proven. Some people claim that their kids showed symptoms of autism right after they received their shots. But, I believe this is more just a correlation of events rather than a cause and effect. I just think that the risks involved with not vaccinating your kids far outweigh the "assumed"-but-not-ever-proven risks of getting them immunized, like we're starting to see now.
Nigel, Obviously, I disagree with you. I think our generation does not understand the problems these horrible diseases caused because we have all been vaccinated (or most of us, which has prevented all the others from getting the diseases). My mom almost went blind from measles. Obviously our immune systems were not strong enough to fight off these horrific diseases on their own, hence all the childhood deaths that occurred before vaccines. Vaccines were created to protect us because our immune systems could not prevent and fight the diseases on their own.
I totally agree with you Carlee!!! I do not believe that autism is linked to immunizations in any way, there have just been too many studies to prove otherwise. I think that this big increase in autism cases that are being diagnosed are really just a matter of parents wanting a name for some odd behaviors for their children that may just as likely be related to their environment and not a disease at all. It seems like everyone is always looking for a diagnosis and then of course a magic pill to make everybody normal. I could go on and on about my theories on autism and also ADHD, but don't have the time, maybe I'll do a post on it some time.
Sorry to disagree with everyone, but having an autistic child who was totally normal before receiving his MMR I have another perspective. Let me state first of all that I am not anti vaccinations. All of my kids have been vaccinated. However, I have studied things at length and every single study that is done showing NO LINK was done through a government organiztion. There are more studies that show there are definite links but are not allowed to be shown via the media because of the mass panic it will create. Vaccinations have been changed to not contain mercury or derivatives anymore but many dr. offices still have supplus vaccines and will use those up first so check with your office and request only mercury free vaccines. Now as far as your child being at risk....Most babies if breastfed will have immunity for several months. Before anybody calls me names please remember that every can protect their own child by not putting them into situations where they will be at risk such as daycares. Most outbreaks of measles occur in communities where nonimmunization is widespread. Most people DO get their children vaccinated. With my personal experience I just don't believe in doing it when their brains are still forming. Also I don't think immunizations alone cause autism. There is usually also a genetic link and then in most cases there is another underlying factor that puts the child at a disadvantage such as a recent ear infection or cold. No one is trying to make your children sick. A health clinic or drs. office will be the LAST place they will tell you the truth. I'm not even anti drs. I just believe in making an informed decision.
I had friends when we lived in Ithaca who literally took their kids all over the world and never vaccinated them. I couldn't believe that they never got sick. I used to be so totally pro vaccination. But now I think it is okay to wait a little bit. With Jude I am waiting until he is 2 to get the rest of his shots instead of 18 months. Because he is so sensitive to things. And I freak out about autism and I know vaccinations don't cause it but I think they are a contributing factor. But I agree, they should be done. Maybe when they are older and a little bigger and able to process it better.
Having spent some of my time as a child in bed, very ill, with mumps and measles, I would certainly opt to have the vaccinations. To a child who doesn't understand that you need to spend at least a week in a darkened room so as to protect your eyes (at least that what what we were told by the Dr.) or not run and play while you have the mumps, a vaccination serves an important purpose. As was mentioned earlier in the comments, the complications from contracting these diseases would be far more prevalent than the remote possibility of them being the cause of autism. Why put other children at risk by not vaccinating?
I still respectfully disagree that delaying infant MMR until the age of two when the brain is finished developing puts other children at risk. There is too much proof otherwise that most babies are immune for some time. You can't just look at one side of the information. People really do lie to put across their agenda. Especially the medical world. Here comes more hate mail now. I won't post here again.
i meant getting his mmr at 12 months...i waited till he was 15 months...sorry...my son isn't even 18 months yet....it was early that morning....forgive my slip
First of all, no you don't have to have your children vaccinated to enroll in public school. The rules vary by state, but in Utah you can wave vaccines for medical, religious, personal, or philosophical reasons. I recommend "The Vaccine Book" by Dr. Robert Sears. It is an excellent reference and he is in no way anti-vaccine. Here is a brief excerpt from his book (when speaking about the MMR vaccine):
"the side effect profile of the vaccine is the longest and most potentially severe (although rare) of all the shots."
He talks about what the diseases are, how the vaccines are made and what their ingredients are. He also compares various brands of vaccines (their ingredients and safety) so that you can make an informed decision not only as to which vaccines you want your children to have but also which brands you feel will be best for them.
His approach is that vaccines don't have to be "all or nothing". I know the subject of vaccines can bring on very heated debates, but I think it is something that we, as parents should study. Vaccines are not "one size fits all".
Something that is controversial is that many vaccines contain animal and/or human tissues. Here is a list of tissues used to make vaccines:
Human blood proteins (albumin) Human lung cells Human fetal lung cells Human cell lines Cow serum (the liquid part of blood) Cow heart-muscle extract Monkey kidney cells Guinea pig embryo cells Chicken embryos Chicken kidney cells Chicken eggs
Contrary to popular belief, not all vaccines are mercury-free. Some flu shots (and a few others) still have mercury.
Here are a few more ingredients in various vaccines:
Our childhood vaccines do not provide a lifetime immunity. If hearing about parents who don't vaccinate their children upsets you perhaps you should ask yourself and the adults around you if your/their booster shots are up to date.
Sorry this is so long. If anyone wants to comment on what I said I will be posting this on a new blog at http://me-speakingfreely.blogspot.com/
We know that vaccines have stuff in them that are harmful to humans. The studies have shown that Autism is not directly caused by vaccines but other studies have shown that it could be a contributing factor. Autism is a multifactorial disease, meaning it has genetic and environmental contibutors. I think vaccines are important but at least spread them out so your child doesn't have to be flooded with all of the toxins. Why not err on the side of caution when it comes to making decisions for our children?
Nate, That is up to you. I don't see a problem with breaking the vaccines up as long as it is possible to do so (some have to be given at certain times or in conjunction with other vaccines to work correctly), and as long as the end result is a fully-vaccinated child. How and when you choose to have them administered is up to you, as the parent, and your child's doctor. As long as you are vaccinating your children, you get my high 5!
