What am I supposed to do? Let her gnaw on a stick of butter?

I took Maggie in for her 15 month check-up yesterday, and once again her weight was an issue. Apparently she hasn't gained hardly anything during the past 3 months. She was 16 lbs. 2 oz. at 12 months and she's 16 lbs. 9 oz. now. So back to McKay-Dee we went to get more blood drawn, this time to test her for celiac disease. I also have to go meet with a growth specialist to discuss her poor growth. Her height and head continue to stay right on track, but her weight has plummeted even further below the curve than is normal even for her.

So am I to assume that her daily intake of lotion and dirt aren't providing the calories she needs? Really though, she's a total food scavenger. And the other night she snuck her way into a canister of sugar. I found her with a good cup of it on the floor around her and she was literally stuffing handfuls in her mouth. So, being the completely health conscious mother that I am, I immediately picked her up and washed all the sugar out of her mouth. Then I gave her a rice krispy treat and sent her on her way.

As further proof that she does in fact eat, the following photos shed light on the fate of a certain chip of hers yesterday:

I really have accepted the fact that she's just fine, but I'm starting to believe she's not gonna face forward in her carseat until she's like 2, and that's just really unfortunate. So for her sake, I'm once again willing to see what's up.

But she is just so dang cute - is it weird that I find the bandage from drawing her blood kinda cute? You probably don't think it is! I am sorry about the whole weight thing. I am sure it is frustrating. Anna's weight started to drop after 6 months and got lower and lower (percentage wise) then all the sudden it jumpeed a bunch from 18 months to 2 years. Maybe it is the hot dogs and cheese, who knows?! LOL. Maggie looks healthy. Oh and by the way, Ross ate butter as a kid. haha. sick.

Yeah, I'm with you. I took Jaxon in for his 6 year old check up two days ago and his weight was 38 lbs... which is the 5th percentile. At his current growth rate, he should be in his booster seat until he's 12... that's about when he'll hit 60 lbs. It's cool to be in a booster seat at 12, right? Sorry, it's so frustrating for you guys. Good luck with the vampire draws...

Tyler did the same thing between 12and 15 months. The doctor must have been having a busy day and didn't notice until we left that he had dropped weight, but I went home determined to make him gain. He was still eating baby food at the time, but what I did was find anything that had a ton of protien. (He didn't drink milk, and still won't). Maybe for breakfast you could give her yogurt. I know you are doing oatmeal because of the whole day after Thanksgiving thing, and we did that too.
Anyway, Beechnut ham pineapple and rice was our solution. I figured he needed 16 grams of protein every day and I was determined to make him get it. I think he's turning into a chunk now.
Sad for the blood drawn thing too. She's a trooper. I hate holding Tyler down when they do it.

That has got to be so frustrating! I'm sorry :(

I love her expression in her chip pictures.. it's like she's wondering why the heck your taking so many pictures of her with a chip.

Even if she's small, she's adorable!

I thought it was normal to not gain as much between 12 and 15 months. And why is no one concerned when there is a super fat baby huh? What, only skinny is bad. Just kidding. I am guessing she is fine by looking at her parents but it is good that you check it out. Now I have to go and make rice crispy treats. Thanks a lot!

I think she is so dang cute and she looks healthy to me. Can't doctors just see that maybe she is just small? Frustrating. I'm always worried about Lucas getting enough to eat but he is 18 lbs at 6 months so I think he is fine, maybe I shouldn't worry! Good luck with that

Carlee, she is so so cute! I'm sorry for all the frustration. Carter is on the skinny end, but tall too, and he didn't hit the 20 pound mark for his 12 month appt. His doctor just said that if he's staying on a consistent growth pattern for him, we're fine. He eats and eats too, but just doesn't gain much. What can you do?

I hope that everything will go well, and that you'll get good news from those tests.

Mitzi,
Yeah, I guess that's where the concern came up. Up until now she's been below the curve, but consistent. Now she's tanked even further below the curve and off her own curve. Anyway, I've been feeding her instant breakfast and high calorie butter and ice cream. So, who knows? I'm definitely not so stressed and concerned like I was last year when we had all the tests run. She's just fine. I guarantee she'll hit a growth spurt later this year.

My daughter was the same way. I dreaded well baby check ups because they were always followed by weight checks a few weeks later and all sorts of unhealthy food suggestions to try and make her gain weight. She is 6 now and average in all things, healthy and happy!!!

Poor Baby! I'm sure she's fine, but it's nice to know your Dr. wants to make sure she's okay! She is such a darling girl! You're a great mommy!

I don't think you have anything to worry about. Maggie does eat, which is a huge deal to me as a mother of a child who does not eat, and she sleeps good and is active and healthy. All kids slow way down on their weight around now because their growth naturally slows and they have become much more active with running and walking! I think it is interesting that you have a doctor who keeps sending your child in for testing because of her slow growth and I have had nothing but doctors who refuse to test my child at all. I still worry about Maeyah because at four she is still growing very slowly and she still won't eat like a normal child and she is still a horrid sleeper. I would love to have her tested for everything! I think Maggie is doing great. Some people are just small and that is okay! Just to let you know, not one of my girls as been up to 20 pounds at a year. I think Kaeley was about 18 pounds at Maggie's age. Jennah was 16 pounds and Maeyah only made it to 15 pounds at one. I don't think Maeyah hit 20 pounds until close to three. Right now she is about a 26-28 pound four year old.

you are the mom and if you don't think you have anything to worry about ... you don't. I love the shirt she is wearing in the first picture, Brylee has the same one.

Carlee, I don't know if you want any other advice but Natalie was a preemie and only weighed 15 lbs at a year. We had a nurse that came to our house every month and told us what to try. One thing she suggested was to add cheese sauce to all of her vegetables and meats. We were able to do this because she always loved vegetables anyway. She did finely start putting on weight and was just below 50% when she was two. Unfortunately both her parents gained weight with this method also.

please let her gnaw on some butter...haha. she is so dang cute!! i'm sorry for all the tests that they have to do though!!

Carlee,

I'm sure you're right! Maggie will probably grow like crazy at some point, and surprise everyone! I see what you mean about her dropping below HER usual. I truly believe that as her mom, you know best, and I'm sure it'll all be fine. Some kids are just smaller than others, and that's okay! I guess you just have to be thankful for a doctor who's making sure she's healthy, huh? She seriously is SO cute.

If you want her to gain lots of weight I can probably arrange to hire her on here at my mortgage company. She might also lose her hair, though.

The story of her life. I am glad you don't seem as stressed about it this time around. I think it is good they are making sure nothing else is wrong but frustrating that you still have to deal with it all the time. She is darn cute though. Love all her little outfits.

Why not give her a tub o' butter---lots more fun! I think she is dang cute. I'm glad you aren't too worried. Sometimes doctors get too hung up on what is 'normal.' All that matters is that she is happy and she totally looks like she is.

One day she will be so glad that she has this "problem." She is so cute and quite the trooper.

I love how small she is. She's so cute. Don't worry you guys are both small. My nephew is the same way he will be four in June and weighs 27 pounds. He is perfectly fine and healthy just really small.

I hope it's not Celiac's... for her sake and yours.
I am gluten intolerant- and living without wheat is a hard adjustment. But if she is, let me know, and I can offer some tips...

Carlee, I had 3 kids that were on the extreem low side of the growth charts; (Natalie did sit in a booster seat until she was probably 10); but look at them now: Brooke is just a cute size on the average/petite side (24 years old); Tyler (17 years old) has gotten taller than me (that made his day); and Natalie (15 years old) is just as cute as a button & glad that she will be able to see over the steering wheel. They are all just fine in size now. I am sure that she eats when she is hungry! Don't let em get to ya!

Hi Carlee, I found your blog while blog-stocking and was surprised how similar your situation is to mine. My daughter just hit 12 months at 15 pounds 15 ounces. She dropped to a much lower percentile (0.43%) from 9 months to 12 months. However her doctor didn't seem super concerned about it after doing a thorough examination she said my daughter appears healthy in every other way besides weight. My advise to you is if the testing comes back normal, then maybe you should just find another pediatrician. Which is exactly what I had to do because her first doctor made me feel like a horrible mother when my daughter wasn't gaining weight at the "normal" rate. Good luck and I hope the tests come back normal!
